- Thoroughly clean their teeth

- Simple, effective screenings
- Detailed care plans
- Education on oral hygiene
- Referrals to other providers you might need

If, during the cleaning and exam, we discover a tooth that needs to be treated, we can often do the work that same day so you don’t need to reschedule and come in again.

We get it: it can feel scary to think about having your child’s tooth completely pulled out of his or her mouth. We provide such extensive restorative treatments for kids because we want to help kids keep their real teeth. However, our ultimate goal is your child’s oral health, and sometimes an extraction is the best way to ensure that.
During a cleaning, our dental hygienist will:
- Explore the surface of your child’s teeth to locate cavities and examine existing fillings
- Examine your child’s gums to look for periodontal disease or bone loss
- Use a variety of tools to remove any hard mineral buildup (tartar) from your child’s teeth
- Floss your child’s teeth
- Polish their teeth with a polishing compound
- Apply fluoride
Cleanings usually aren’t painful, but if your child has any anxiety about the dental exam, be sure to let the hygienist know. They may offer several sedation options to ensure your child’s comfort.
During your child’s exam, the dentist will:
- Thoroughly examine your child’s teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other health problems
- Take X-rays to see what is happening beneath the surface of the teeth and gums
- Suggest any needed treatment
If the dentist or hygienist finds tooth decay or gum disease, they will talk to you about changing your child’s brushing or flossing habits. If needed, they may recommend antibiotics or other dental treatments. If your child’s teeth and gums are healthy, the dentist will probably recommend that your child continue his or her brushing and flossing routine as usual.
Why It’s Important
Did you know the American Dental Association recommends that your child visit the dentist every six months? Coming in for regular checkups doesn’t just ensure that your child’s teeth stay beautiful--it also protects their health for the long term.
By routinely seeing the dentist for exams and cleanings, your child can:
- Prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath
- Avoid costly and extensive dental procedures
- Reducing staining from food and drinks
- Shorten the time spent in the dentist’s office
- Prevent systemic health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea
